Bookstore Coffee Table
Materials and tools:
- carpenter's glue;
- threaded rod (available for purchase, for example, OBI);
- 8 nuts corresponding to the rod
- oil paint and primer;
- office knife;
In this project, 16 books for each leg were used for each leg.
And before starting the assembly, it is necessary to fold the book-legs without joining and try on the table so that it is stable - to make a finishing fitting before the assembly begins.
A little bit about safety - put on PVC gloves and goggles before work.
Let's get started, first of all we will make a hole in the books - this is quite a tiresome part of the work. Immediately determine the upper and lower books, the most high-quality and dense.
Mark a center on each book. Tip: in order to make the legs more interesting, you don’t have to drill the books clearly in the middle, it’s better to move away from the center on each book in one direction or another.So the legs of the table will look even more impressive.
For the convenience of drilling, use the box or books to provide clearance.
Drilling is better for one book - it's quite difficult, because pages can be screwed on the drill and tear. This can be avoided by stepping on the book while drilling, but it is better if you squeeze the book with clamps. Drill carefully and try to keep the drill at a right angle. After you drill a book, go a few more times through it with a drill to smooth the hole and peel off the pieces of paper.
Follow the directions in the second picture for drilling the top and bottom books.
This is the most interesting and creative part of the project.
First, in the selected books for the upper and lower parts of the legs, we make special recesses for the nut and washer. We will cut them out with the help of a clerical knife, for this we will put a nut and circle it, and then we will cut it out according to the resulting office. For better fixation of the nut, use silicone or wood glue.
And so, we pass through the first book and fix it with a nut, coat the cover and the core with glue and put on the next book (you can combine books,so that the legs turned out more interesting). We fill the rod with snaps to the desired height and do not forget to smear the covers with glue.
After all the books are worn, you should pull them tight with a scab and fix them with a nut; The scabbing should be left until the glue dries. The tighter you are, the more stable the table will be.
Pages of books can be smeared with PVA glue for better fixation of pages.
Now we are waiting for the glue to dry completely.
Paint legs. This stage can be skipped, but it is he who makes the legs look beautiful.
You can use oil paints or a primer for painting. For ease of painting, it is better to use paint or airbrush, so the paint will fall better and smoother. It is better to paint in several layers.
Finishing - to seal the primer and to make it waterproof, varnish it with polyurethane.
For the countertop we use MDF sheet (you can buy a finished countertop), depending on the destination, choose the thickness.
In the worktop, drill holes for the rods and make indentations on the thickness of the nuts to “drown” the nuts in the worktop.
We smear the top book with carpenter's glue, set the tabletop, thread the rods and tighten the nuts tightly. We close the nuts with putty and paint the table top.
Glue the previously prepared drawing (you can skip) on the tabletop, cover the plexiglass.
