How to lay laminate - laying technology and base preparation

Laminate - a great option for flooring: it has a beautiful and representative appearance, in which it has an affordable price. But, like any material, it requires compliance with certain operating conditions and installation rules. Laying laminate is possible on any type of floor, including, and on wooden, but in all cases has a number of nuances that must be taken into account.

Laminate selection and optimum installation conditions

The optimum temperature for indoor air ranges from + 15– + 30 ° C; humidity should not exceed 70%. Laminate is afraid of water, so its installation is unacceptable in bathrooms, pools and other similar areas. If you need to finish the floor in the kitchen, you should choose a moisture-resistant model.

Also, laminate is divided into classes 31 through 34. Classes 31 and 32 are for home use. In commercial buildings, such as offices, restaurants, shops and others, class 33is used for rooms with a large load, which you can learn more about here: laminat / 33-class. The last class 34 has an industrial purpose. Properly chosen for the upcoming load laminate is already half the successful pledge of its future operation.

Most often the texture of the laminate looks like a tree. But there are other varieties that have a more original appearance: smooth, matte, with chamfers, texture and others.

After you bring the laminate to the room where it will be installed, you must give the material a few days to rest in order for it to adapt to the conditions of humidity and air temperature. Only then can you start work. The surface must be well prepared and carefully leveled: drops in height of no more than 2 mm per meter are lowered. The base must be rigid and well fixed. Also note that this cover can not be mounted on an electric floor heating, but if properly installed on a similar water system, it will regularly serve for many years.

Rules for the preparation of grounds

There are certain requirements for each foundation.

Concrete floor. If a new screed has been made, it is possible to start work no earlier than one month after its installation, when it has completely hardened. If the floor is old, you need to carefully examine it for the presence of cracks that require repair. With large irregularities, the coupler is leveled using self-leveling mixtures or self-leveling floors.

Linoleum and ceramic tile. It is not necessary to dismantle these materials, they can be laid directly on them, provided that a special substrate is used.

Wooden floors. The boards should not have any bulging surfaces. In case of minor defects, they can be eliminated by means of a scraping. Also recently, leveling with plywood sheets has been widely used. The floor must be firmly held on the logs and not bend when walking. If the lags themselves become unstable, a complete replacement of the base will be required.

Laminate laying technology

Today, there are the following technologies for laying this flooring:

  • longitudinal,
  • Transverse,
  • diagonal,

The direction is chosen depending on the area of the room and the location of windows in it. Classical methods (longitudinal and transverse) are most often used in apartments and offices; their laying comes from the windows towards the light. This option is also the most economical: usually waste does not exceed 5% of the material.

Diagonal resembles a classic, but is carried out at an angle of 45 degrees. It has a spectacular and unusual appearance, but reserves more waste, especially in narrow and long rooms.

Laminate stacks on the chess principle, which implies the displacement of each of the next row by half of the panel, so that the coating has high strength. When combining various colors of boards in this way, you can achieve a very original look and reproduce whole patterns on the floor. Available color options can be found here:

Modern laminate is most often mounted without glue. Glue method exists, but it is rarely used in areas with very high loads and high humidity. The most common attachment methods are “Click” and “Lock” lock connections. In the first version, the spike enters the groove at an angle of 30 degrees, where it reliably “snaps” after the panel is lowered down. As a result, the attachment points remain almost invisible. The “Click” lock closes the laminate plates horizontally due to tamping with a hammer. Great care should be taken in this work, as it can be easily damaged.

Basic styling

Installation of laminate start from the wall with a window, in the classic version - parallel to the rays of light. Between the material and the wall must leave a gap of 0.5 - 1.5 cm, but not more than two. The same indent should be made from all pipes and other obstacles that will occur on the way. If this is not done, the panels may eventually change in size, rest against the wall and swell. Spacing wedges are installed to maintain the gap between the wall and the boards.

When stacking, make sure that the locks are well connected to each other, and the contact lines are even. The last board is laid cut to the desired size, after which the first strip as closely as possible pressed against the wall with struts, and begins laying the second. When it is mounted, a small offset is made to increase the strength of the coating.

The first row is the most difficult, as it must be perfectly aligned, and you will be guiding all the other boards along it. Then the work will go quickly, and installation in the room does not take much time.
