  7. Before gluing it is necessary to paint the ends of the part. White crop lines spoil the overall look of the model. To paint the ends, use watercolors or gouache paints. After selecting the desired color, apply them in a thin layer, then allow the paint to dry. About markers better to forget;
  8. Take your time with gluing. First, cut out the part, paint it from the end, wait for the paint to dry, assemble the part. Attach it to the place where it should be to make sure everything is done correctly. And only then stick. Do not forget to let the glue dry.

The full official name of the car is Gepanzerte Selbstfahrlafette fur Sturmgeschutz 7.5 cm Kanone. According to the departmental head of the ministry of armaments of Nazi Germany, the self-propelled gun was designated as Sd.Kfz.142. StuG III is also referred to as StuG 40; in Soviet literature this machine was called "Artsturm". StuG III was actively used on all fronts of the Second World War and generally received good reviews from the German command: according to the reports of the Hitlerites, by early 1944 on the account of StuG III there were about 20,000 enemy tanks. The first five prototypes were produced in 1937 on the chassis of Pantserkampfwagen III Ausf. B. They were armed with a short-barreled 75-mm Sturmkanone 37 L / 24 cannon (with a 24-caliber barrel) with a low initial velocity of the projectile. After a collision in Russia with T-34 tanks, it was decided to re-equip the Extrusion III with a long-barreled cannon suitable for defeating the armor of Soviet tanks. From the spring of 1942, 75-mm Sturmkanone 40 L / 43 guns were used, and in the fall of this year, even longer-barreled versions of this gun - L / 48.

Later Stue III models were also equipped with a 7.92 mm MG-34 machine gun mounted in front of the commander's hatch (as there was no other way to mount the machine gun).

All the cars in the Sturmgeshütz series were cheaper to manufacture than tanks on the same chassis.Stoug III was worth 82.5 thousand marks, while Panzerkampfwagen III was worth more than 103 thousand marks (the towed version of the same 75-mm cannon used in Stug, cost 12 thousand marks).

In total, until the end of the war, over 10,500 copies were made in various modifications.

Development History

During the initial phase of World War II, the German command in 1939 raised the question of creating mobile artillery operating in infantry combat formations and clearing its way to the battlefield by destroying machine guns and towed enemy cannons by direct fire. Compared to tanks, the combat vehicle of the new concept did not require the placement of weapons in a rotating turret, priority areas were firepower, small dimensions, good frontal booking and low production cost. The company «Daimler-Benz» succeeded in successfully translating all these wishes into reality - its designers placed a short-barreled 75-mm gun in the armored wheelhouse on the chassis of the PzKpfw III tank with an increase in frontal booking of up to 50 mm (the base had only 30 mm). The resulting ACS StuG III has become the most popular model of German armored vehicles of the Second World War and has worked well in battles.The serious weakness of StuG III was the lack of a machine gun and the low initial velocity of the projectile. As a result, the self-propelled gun was defenseless in close combat and against tanks with good armor, so the StuG III alone was used infrequently. These problems were solved by the beginning of 1943, when the final version of the StuG III Ausf G received a 75-mm long-barreled gun, a machine gun, an 80-mm frontal booking and side screens protecting against cumulative ammunition and bullets of anti-tank guns.

Later, the German designers created a number of mass models of assault guns on the basis of another main medium tank PzKpfw IV and a small series of self-propelled artillery guns «Assaultrifles»onthebasisofaheavytankPzKpfwVIAusfH«TigerI».

Major Modifications

StuG III 0-serie (s.Pak) - an early version of self-propelled guns (1937). Self-propelled gun made on the basis of Pz III Ausf. B, with wheelhouse made of non-armored steel. Armed with a short-barreled 75mm cannon (barrel length 24 caliber) Stuk37 / L24. It is known that at least 5 pieces were produced. It is believed that these experimental machines, due to insufficient armor, were used for training purposes, possibly later sent to the front.

StuG III Ausf. A - the first serial version of the self-propelled gun (January 1940).Frontal booking 50 mm, armed with a short-barreled 75-mm cannon with a barrel length of 24 caliber Stuk37 / L24. Due to problems with timely delivery of the chassis, 20 vehicles of the series with chassis numbers 90401-90420 were released on the chassis of the Pz III Ausf production tanks. G. Due to the fact that the frontal armor of the tank was only 30 mm, it was reinforced with an additional 20-mm sheet fastened with bolts. Despite the fact that often in the literature, these machines refer to the modification of Ausf. B, it is more correct to attribute them to the Ausf modification. A, since they were still equipped with a Maybach SRG 328 145 10-speed gearbox.

StuG III Ausf. B - (June 1940). Frontal booking 50 mm, armed with a short-barreled 75-mm cannon Stuk37 / L24. The main difference between this modification and the previous one was the introduction of wider tracks (38 cm wide), wide sprocket and track rollers, as well as a new 6-speed ZF SSG 77 Aphon gearbox.

StuG III Ausf. C - (May 1941). Simplified construction felling. A new periscope sight of the SflZF-1 gun was introduced, which also required changing the design of the gunner's hatch. At the beginning of 1942, many cars were rearmed with Stuk40 / L43 long-barreled guns.

StuG III Ausf. D - (June 1941). The only established difference from the previous modification is — installation of an electric bell at the driver’s right ear, for signals to be given by the commander,and for the first time, the technology of hardening of frontal armor parts was applied. At the beginning of 1942, many vehicles were rearmed with Stuk40 / L43 long-barreled guns. Three self-propelled guns of this type were sent to Africa and used by the German African Corps.

StuG III Ausf. E - (Sept. 1941). This modification was developed as a commander machine, with improved communications equipment, which required installation on both sides of the wheelhouse and an increase in the onboard niches for the installation of radio equipment. The machine is equipped with an additional radio station and antenna.

StuG III Ausf. F - (Sep. 1942). The first large-scale version. Anti-tank capabilities of the machine are increased, frontal booking is increased to 80 mm by welding up 30 mm of additional armor plates. A long-barreled Stuk 40 / L43 75-mm gun with a 43-barrel barrel was installed. Installed a fan on the roof of the cabin to reduce the gas content of the fighting compartment.

StuG III Ausf. F / 8 - (Oct. 1942). Frontal booking 80 mm. An additional 30 mm armored plates fastened with bolts. The Stuk 40 / L48 75 mm long-barreled cannon was installed with a 48-caliber barrel.
