It’s the news story on everyone’s lips and now the stars have taken to Twitter in response to the UK’s riots and the nationwide clean-up campaign.

Piers Morgan @piersmorgan was one of the first big names to comment, saying: ‘Let’s get one thing straight: these people aren’t ‘protesting’, they are thieving and destroying. #LondonRiots’. Singer Jessie J (@jessiejofficial) added: ‘Watching the news. I really dont understand… I dont get it??!!! Why destroy your own community?’

@MissKellyO (aka Kelly Osbourne) took a break from criticising fellow stars (Christina Aguilera and Kate Middleton can relax!) to say: ‘I just cant believe whats going on in Tottenham people are destroying there own communities now they really will have nothing its so sad…’ – while an astounded Lily Allen, now @MrsLRCooper, added: ‘Are we on the brink of civil war or something ?’

Many were worried about friends and family caught in cities under attack.

@MissKellyO tweeted: ‘spent the last 3 hours trying to get hold of all my friends in london finally the last one texted me back & is home safe. i need a nap!’ (@justinbieber) wrote: ‘WHOAH…been out of the loop all day. to all the people of the UK I hope you are ok. my prayers go out to you and the amazing people there’ before tweeting the hashtag #prayforlondon. The Hills star Whitney Port (@whitneyEVEport) echoed Justin’s sentiments, tweeting the hashtag #prayforEngland

Some stars have been affected directly by the violence.

TV chef Jamie Oliver told followers @jamieoliver how his Birmingham restaurant had it’s windows smashed in by rioters and singer MIA tweeted that one cousin’s restaurant had been vandalised and another relative’s shop had been looted by ‘a five year old’.
