But if you’re worried about the impact your mocha habit is having on your physique – not to mention your ability to function without a near-constant intravenous flow of caffeine, there is a cheaper and equally effective alternative to help you on your way up the corporate ladder – simply stop taking the lift all the time.

A recent study of sleep-deprived workers, published in the journalPhysiology and Behaviour, found that 10 minutes of walking up and down the stairs at an easy pace had a more beneficial effect on energy levels than a 50mg shot of caffeine – that’s more than you’d find in a cup of tea and almost as much as an espresso.

The participants also experienced a small but notable boost in “motivation for work” following their jaunt up to the fifth floor and back – which makes refusing to depart from your desk on busy days a false economy.
