Twist the fabric and just dip into the paint to get stunning patterns.

Japanese shibori technique is one of the most common techniques for dyeing fabrics. It involves twisting, tying, folding, winding fabric on objects and much more, after which the fabric itself falls into the paint and then dries. Due to the preliminary twisting on the fabric, patterns of amazing beauty are obtained, which are very difficult to repeat with a simple brush. If you also want to try to decorate a monochromatic T-shirt or paint napkins with unusual painted patterns, then rather stock up with all the necessary attributes!

For painting fabrics using the “shibori” technique, you will need:

  • paint for fabric, for example, colors "Indigo" (this is a rich blue, denim color);
  • clothing or fabric (natural);
  • two large buckets;
  • gum;
  • latex gloves;
  • PVC pipe (or other object of a rounded oblong shape);
  • thread, string or braid;
  • small square planks (or squares of thick cardboard);
  • long wooden stick (you can adapt an unnecessary ruler);
  • scissors.

There are many different subspecies of shibori technique. Here are just some of them:

Itajime shibori.It is based on folding the fabric in several layers and their subsequent consolidation. Fold the accordion fabric:

Repeat folding accordion, but in a different direction. Then place the fabric between the two wooden planks and very tightly and firmly tie the thread. The larger the square of the fabric, the more white color will remain on the finished product, and vice versa.

Arashi Shibori (Arashi shibori).Involves getting a "vortex pattern." To do this, the fabric should be wrapped around the PVC tube.

Then begin to fasten with a string, while making an accordion. Those places on the fabric, which will be closed with string, will remain white.

Kumo Shibori (Kumo shibori).It includes both bending and folding of the fabric into bundles. Fold the fabric accordion, then make the flagella, secure them with rubber bands.

The larger and longer the harnesses, the more interesting the finished drawing.

So, fabric blanks for dyeing are ready. Getting to the final stage.

We make paint according to the instructions.

Wear gloves and take the workpiece. Dip them in the paint and gently squeeze in your hands so that the paint will soak the fabric. But do not move the fixed fabric, otherwise the drawing will “go”.

Repeat the dyeing process until you reach the desired color saturation. Let them dry a little (overnight) before unfolding.

In the technique of shibory it is impossible to make a mistake. Look at what wonderful patterns we have made!

Hang the fabric to dry out completely. Then wash it in a machine without powder and dry it again. Enjoy your creative moments!
